microneedling Charleston

Also known as Percutaneous Collagen Induction (PCI) or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). Microneedling is a minimally invasive, skin-perfecting procedure that stimulates the production of new collagen.

The procedure is performed in a safe and precise manner, utilizing a sterile micro-needling component. There are specific protocols for aging, pigmentation, and acne. These protocols optimize your safety, results and outcomes.

Treatment Time

To properly prepare your skin for microneedling, it is best to arrive with no makeup. We will cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing cream to reduce any discomfort during the procedure. This cream is left on for approximately 20-30 minutes. Once removed, we will begin the procedure. Most find this to be a very quick and comfortable experience. After the microneedling is complete, we will cleanse your skin and place you under the LED light for 15 minutes and then apply topical serums and cold masque to reduce any redness that is present. This step is the most sought and significantly reduces redness and is an extra special touch that ensures your skin is comfortable prior to leaving your appointment.

What to Expect

A sterile cartridge containing 16 sterile, stainless steel microneedles that can penetrate up to 1.5 mm into the dermis is used to create pinpoint penetrations, promoting a collagen-stimulating healing process.

Pinpoint bleeding is the clinical endpoint to achieve over the entire treatment area and triggers the wound healing cascade.

Skin is naturally stimulated to regenerate and new collagen is formed to help reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, fine lines and acne scars.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

  • If you have active acne in the area of treatment, please contact us to reschedule.

  • If you have a history of cold sores, please inform your provider. You may need to contact your PCP so they may prescribe an anti-viral medication to take as part of your microneedling treatment. This is a preventative measure. A protective gel will also be applied to your lips prior to the treatment.

  • Notify us if you have any history of keloid scarring, metal or skin allergies, or if you have been on Isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6 months.

  • No sun exposure, tanning beds or self-tanning products for three days prior to the procedure. Procedure will be canceled if you are sunburned. Bring a hat and/or scarf on the day of your procedure to wear after your treatment.

  • Avoid Retin-A, retinoids, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, hydroquinone and benzoyl peroxide 3 days prior to treatment. No chemical peels, waxing, and chemical depilatories should be performed within 2 weeks of treatment.

  • Topical numbing cream will be applied prior to your treatment to allow for a comfortable treatment. Notify us of any medication allergies, if you are pregnant or nursing.

  • Please arrive with fully cleansed skin: no makeup, moisturizers, perfume, cologne, or any other products on the skin. Do not shave the area to be treated the day of the procedure.

Post Treatment Care

After microneedling your skin will be red and flushed like if you had a moderate sunburn. Redness should be greatly reduced within 24-48 hours. You may experience swelling, burning, itching, bruising, soreness, skin tightness, flakiness, sensitivity, and dryness. It may take up to 5-7 days for the skin to heal depending on the extensiveness of your treatment. Make sure to wash your face with only cool water and mild cleanser provided and pat dry skin. A Mineral based sunscreen of SPF 30+ should be applied and reapplied every 60-90 minutes while outdoors. Please wear a wide brimmed hat for additional protection.

Immediately After Treatment Cleanse with a mild, gentle cleanser daily. Gently pat dry – do not rub. If your skin feels dry or tight, apply a gentle moisturizer. Avoid activities that will heat up your skin, such as going in a hot tub/Jacuzzi/sauna, taking a very hot shower, or strenuous exercise for 2 days after treatment.

    • Use ONLY your post-treatment products for the first four days after your treatment.

    • No vitamin A products for 7 days post treatment (Retin A, Retinol, Tazorac).

    • No exfoliating medications, toners, harsh chemical products, scrubs or devices for at least 7 days post treatment.

    • No chemical peels for 14 days post treatment.

    • Moisturizer should be applied one to two times per day.

    • We also recommend using a vitamin C serum daily to help with healing and to decrease pigmentation.

    • A cool, damp compress and Tylenol can be used if you are feeling discomfort or swelling.

    • Do not use anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Ibuprofen as they may decrease the desired inflammatory benefits of micro-needling.

    • DO NOT apply ice to the treatment area – this may result in altered tissue perfusion and injury to the skin

    • Eat fresh pineapples or drink pineapple juice to minimize bruising and swelling.

    • Arnica supplements may be taken to help with any bruising.

  • Do not shave for 3 days after your procedure and longer if the skin is still irritated.

    • Continue gentle cleansing and moisturizing over the next few days.

    • Avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or using exfoliants for 1 week.

    • Apply sunscreen daily and you can use makeup if needed starting the day after treatment.

    • Your skin will be sensitive for the first week or two after treatment.

    • Do not use products that will cause irritation during this time.

    • Please do not use any scrubs, toners, glycolic acid, retinoids (RetinA or Retinol) until your skin has healed, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
